Rice is a buff orpington domestic duck and approximately 1.5 years old. She was one of three ducks on a property that was devastated by the Thomas fires in December 2017. They survived the flames but unfortunately were left to mostly fend for themselves. Two of the ducks did not survive one night, most likely due to coyotes. Luckily for Rice, some wonderful neighbors discovered the remaining animals and ensured their safety in the remaining coops and called us to re-home her. She arrived to her new home and was placed in a temporary enclosure with a donated stock tanks for a pool, and came ALIVE. She dove and swam and showed us her sweet personality, wiggling her tail. She was successfully introduced to the resident chickens and loves being part of the flock (even if they photobomb her portrait). We plan to build an enclosure with a small working pond for our more aquatic residents and rescues once we move the sanctuary.
