We know the rescue work they do at a farm animal sanctuary, a free place for exploited animals rescued from the food industry or any form of abuse, to give them the second chance they deserve.
At animal sanctuaries, all efforts are dedicated to rescuing, sheltering, and curing as many victims as possible. The Sanctuary’s mission is to provide a safe home to farm animals that have no place in most shelters. Since many of them come from the devastating meat, egg, and milk industry, apart from giving them the opportunity they deserve to respect their lives, they promote a vegan lifestyle as the best way to avoid their death and suffering.
Around the world, there are places dedicated to the rescue and care of rescued animals, victims of the exploitation of circuses, zoos, scientific experiments, or the possession of “exotic pets.” These places are named after sanctuaries, organizations committed to their well-being and giving them a home for life, especially in cases where these animals cannot, for various reasons, be reinserted into the wild.
Some of these sanctuaries are dedicated to giving a home to a particular species, such as elephant sanctuaries. In contrast, others open their doors to a specific family, such as big cats or primates. But what about farm animals?
The reality of the “farm.”
If we stop to think about the conditions in which farm animals live around the world, images most likely come to mind of narrow cages without natural light, full of animals that suffer permanent stress caused by overcrowding.
A daily torture that only ends when these animals are killed for their meat succumb to diseases or are slaughtered as soon as their “useful life” ends. But what if we could imagine another place where farm animals can live? A better place?
Many sanctuaries are designed as refuge spaces for these animals, who appear to be the greatest victims of industrial exploitation and consumption. They open their doors to these rescued animals, giving them a home for life.
A second chance
In these places, the animals receive all the necessary daily care and enjoy the freedom of living in large spaces while cultivating social ties with other animals. A peaceful and pleasant existence that is only possible thanks to sanctuaries, and their mission is to protect these wonderful animals from being sold, abandoned, used in experiments or scientific tests, or becoming victims of exploitation as animals for production, consumption, or breeding. This means that no one will consume its meat, drink its milk, or wear its skin.
Thanks to sanctuaries, cows, pigs, chickens, and sheep—among many other farm species around the globe—can live in peace until the end of their days in the company of humans committed to their well-being and other animals who, like them, will avoid a life of suffering and loneliness. In the case of male chickens, cows, and pigs, a sanctuary is a second chance at life, preventing the mass, unnecessary, and premature killing of these baby animals, a common practice in the industry.
However, unlike other spaces dedicated to animal protection, such as wildlife rehabilitation centers or domestic animal adoption centers, the Sanctuary is not a place of passage or a temporary home. In the vast majority of cases, the Sanctuary seeks to be a permanent home where the resident animals will be able to live an existence as close as possible to what they could find in nature without neglecting to receive quality food, veterinary care, and—most importantly—love from their caregivers.
